Finding quality, quantity and good value in web-content

These days successful sites are all about content, and lots of it. Whether its professionally written or 2.0 self generated rubbish, there is a demand for fresh content regularly if you want your site to do well in search. This is the trend at present, the engines admire sites that constantly are updated with new content.

So, where do you find it. Content generating tools are one option but they are flawed, the grammar may be impressive but a real person reading it realises it doesn’t make sense and leaves the site, unimpressed.

A professional site will need real content, written by real writers. And it’s not jsut words on a page but something that makes the reader want to read on and gain useful information. There are plenty of boilershops in India churning out laughable content.

For example, many travel sites need guides. To write a travel guide you need to have traveled. And most the Indians writing away have never left India. Sure you can copy other sites but unless you understand what Gothic really is, or a medieval town, you’re going to get it wrong.

On the other hand seasoned travel writers are expensive, because they prefer to travel and get paid handsomely for waxing lyrical about some exotic place, for a mag like conde naste traveller. They’re out of touch with the web as a medium.

You need a fine balance between quantity and quality to suit a budget designed for 2000 pages (about three guide books). It simply wouldn’t be economical or profitable to pay someone to go there and research the place.

So, the answer is a team of well traveled backpackers who can write fairly well. And they need to be based somewhere where it’s cheap. Of course you need native English speakers ideally and ones from a place wealthy enough to be able to travel. Ultimately you have to find a group of expats who wish to live in a third world country but find first world work, with a compromise of salary.
